What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is an acid applied to the skin surface, to loosen the build up of dead skin cells.
What types of acids are used?
The most common acids used are alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) or beta-hydrogy acids (BHA). These acids are used for light to medium depth peels. Trichloroacetic acids (TCA) are used for medium to deep peels. Phenol peels are deep peels that usually require anesthesia and should only be preformed by Plastic Surgeons or Dermatologists. In out clinic we use medical grade peels, and perform many Trichloracetic Acid TCA, and Jessner Peels, which are combination of acids.
What are the benefits of chemical peels?
Chemical peels improve uneven skin tone, uneven texture, they also lighten hyper pigmentation, minimize fine lines and wrinkle and pores. They also are good for treating and improving acne.
How is a chemical peel performed?
The skin is cleansed and is degreased with a prepping solution; the acid is then applied in a single layer or multiple layers depending on what acid is used. The peels we use in our clinic are self neutralizing and are left on, and specialty serums, masks and SPF are applied.
What should I expect after the peel?
The skin will feel warm and tight. You will notice the skin is pink or red. In the next few days to a week, you will notice the skin starting to peel. Let the skin peel on its own, do not pull the skin off as this can cause scarring. Apply a moisturizer if advised.
How many treatments are needed?
Usually peels are done in a series of six to eight treatments, every two to four weeks apart. Depending on what conditions you are treating.
How much does a peel cost?
The cost varies depending on what type of peel is used. Come in and we will do a skin analysis to determine which peel will work best for you and your particular skin care needs.
